Mission Kitchen
This kitchen remodel in San Francisco's Mission District was guided by an emphasis on clarity, function, and strong visual expression. The homeowners wanted to start fresh, rethinking the space to better support daily cooking as well as larger gatherings. Early in the process, the designer worked closely with them to shape a vision that felt both personal and practical. Principles drawn from the artist Andrea Zittel informed much of the thinking, especially the balance between openness and security in everyday life. The kitchen was imagined as a space able to evolve with the clients' routines over time. This approach led to exposed joinery, integrated pulls, and a mobile island frame that could adapt as needs changed. Color was used strategically to define different zones, while the cabinetry's low-sheen finish responds subtly to shifting daylight, giving the room a quiet sense of movement throughout the day.
